Sijia Pan will present her paper “Intergenerational Coresidence and Female Career and Family Choices” on Tuesday, May 13th at 9.30-10.30 in Auditorium 4.
Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between female labor supply, marriage and fertility decisions, and living arrangements choices. Using the China Family Panel Study (CFPS) dataset, I conduct an event study and develop a dynamic structural model that integrates a search-matching component with a discrete choice framework, explicitly accounting for family structure—an aspect often overlooked in traditional female labor supply research. Preliminary findings suggest that co-residence with elderly family members mitigates child penalty for women; however, it may also lead to a reduction in their bargaining power within the household.
